It's a fair question, and one that comes up a lot — usually from someone who's just bought an e-bike and doesn't fancy finding out the hard way at the bottom of a gondola queue.

Can you take an e-bike on the lifts in Morzine?

Yes. Nearly all of the bike-friendly lifts across the Portes du Soleil carry e-bikes exactly like any other mountain bike, on the same lift pass. There's no e-bike surcharge and no separate ticket. Load it on the rack, ride up, ride down.

Do you need a different lift pass for an e-bike?

No. It's the same Portes du Soleil MTB pass, at the same price. As a Bike Morzine customer a 6-day adult pass is £199, and it'll be waiting for you when you arrive.

Does the weight matter?

In practice, not for the lift — but it matters for you. E-bikes are heavier than analogue bikes, and lifting one onto a chairlift rack is a bit more of a heave, particularly if you're not tall. It's an argument for a bit of technique rather than a reason to leave the e-bike at home. The lift staff have loaded thousands of them.

Why bother with lifts if you've got a motor?

With the worlds biggest mtb lift network on your door step an E-bike is definitely not nessercary and we encourage most people to ride enduro or downhill bikes. However if you are a deadset e-bike warrior then there is a place for e-bikes to explore further afield in the Portes du Soleil. The lifts get you the big vertical for free and save your battery; the motor then lets you link up trails, chase a second climb, or keep up with the fitter half of the group on the flat bits. Riders who use both tend to cover far more ground in a day than either alone.

The Portes du Soleil also has 35 routes designed specifically for e-bikes, so there's plenty that isn't just bike park laps.

Where can you charge it?

There are 22 free charging stations dotted around the Portes du Soleil, and some mountain restaurants will let you top up while you have lunch if you ask nicely.  With the lifts doing most of the heavy lifting range anxiety isnt too much of an issue.

Can you hire an e-bike from Bike Morzine?

Yes — our e-MTB hire is £99 a day, helmet included, and every bike is serviced overnight. One thing worth knowing: we don't rent e-bike batteries on their own, so it's the whole bike or nothing.

And if you were thinking of flying your own e-bike out — don't. Airlines won't carry the batteries.

The short version

With 25+ bike friendly lifts in the Portes du Soleil you definitely do not need an e-bike and we always encourage people to ride an analog bike where possible. But if you are dead-set on your e-bike bring it, or hire one here. The lifts don't care, the pass is the same price.
