Should You Drive or Fly to Morzine With Your Mountain Bike?

Every group has this argument. One bloke has done the drive since 2009 and will die on that hill. Someone else has found a £39 flight. Somebody quietly asks whether they could just hire out here. Here's the honest answer from people that do this for a living.

Should you drive or fly to Morzine with your bike?

If you're coming for a week for 2, travelling solo, a pair or small group, and value your time then its Fly every time— Geneva is roughly 1.5 hours from Morzine. Drive if you're a large crew, can fill out a car/van, bringing loads of bikes, tools or want to check out other resorts..

The case for flying

It's quick. Most major UK airports are around 1.5 hours flight time to Geneva, and Geneva to Morzine is about another 1.5 hours by road. You can leave the UK by breakfast and be having a beer in town by mid-afternoon.

The catch is your bike. Airlines charge for bike bags, the fee varies  between carriers, some arent so bad and some will sting you., Add a bike bag you had to buy or borrow, the faff of getting it to the airport, and the genuine risk of a baggage handler introducing your rear mech to a concrete floor, and the cheap flight stops looking quite so cheap.

What about just hiring a bike in Morzine?

This is the option people skip past, and it's often the right one. No bike bag, no fees, no oversize baggage desk, no reassembling a bike in a chalet car park at midnight, and nothing to break in transit.

Our hire bikes are serviced every night, and a helmet is included — so you turn up with your riding kit and pedals and that's it. If you're flying, the hire cost frequently lands close to what you'd have spent on bike fees both ways, and you've saved yourself the entire hassle.

The case for driving

You bring your own bike, set up how you like it, with your spares and your tools. If there are three or four of you splitting fuel and tolls, the per-person cost drops fast — and that's where driving starts to genuinely win. Two bikes each? Driving, easily.

The catch is that it's a long day. It's a proper drive from the Channel to the Alps, and 7 out of the 9 hours are very boring straight roads. The drive out is exciting but heading home knackered after a week of epic riding and dreading work, not so fun.

As of 2026 Morzine town now charges for parking and the resort isn't super campervan friendly any more. Thankfully the vast majority of our Morzine Summer Accommodation include parking but be sure to check before you book your accommodation.

What if you're bringing an e-bike?

Then the decision is largely made for you. Airlines will not carry e-bike batteries — the watt-hour ratings are far above what's permitted in the hold or the cabin. If you want to ride your own e-bike here, you're driving.

So what do most people do?

Pairs and small groups coming for a quick holiday usually fly. Bigger groups, and anyone bringing lots of bikes usually drive. Both work — it's genuinely about how much your time is worth and which is the most convenient for you.
